Carlsbad takes its name from Carlsbad Village: in 1883, a former sailor named John Frazier dug a well here and found mineral water chemically similar to the famed spa at Karlsbad, Bohemia (today's Karlovy Vary). Developers built a marketing campaign around the discovery, and the name stuck for the entire city. The site of that original well still sits at Alt Karlsbad, a replica German Hanseatic house on Carlsbad Boulevard, and it remains one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. The Village's current Coaster station opened in 1995 at 2775 State Street, a few blocks from where the original 1887 California Southern Railroad depot once stood; that historic depot building still exists today as a visitor center.
