Kearny Mesa Property Management, Business, Auto Row, and Convoy District

Kearny Mesa's name traces to Camp Kearny, a military installation active from 1917 to 1946 that eventually became Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and the neighborhood urbanized around Gibbs Airfield, later renamed Montgomery Field, starting in 1937. Aerospace and electronics companies established an industrial park here beginning in 1955, and that commercial and industrial character has defined Kearny Mesa ever since, rather than the residential-first identity of neighboring Serra Mesa or Tierrasanta.

The Convoy District earned official designation as San Diego's Pan-Asian Cultural and Business Innovation District in 2020, a corridor whose Asian dining and retail scene traces back to a Woo Chee Chong grocery store and the Korean market Zion, both opening on Convoy Street in 1979. Nijiya Market followed in 1986 before expanding across California and Hawaii, and major chains like 99 Ranch Market, Mitsuwa, and H Mart have since joined them, making Kearny Mesa a dining and shopping destination that draws far beyond the neighborhood's own residents.

Kearny Mesa also carries a long-running auto sales corridor alongside the Spectrum mixed-use development on the former General Dynamics site, giving the neighborhood a genuinely mixed commercial base: aerospace and industrial employers, a major auto row, and one of the region's most established Asian dining districts, all inside the same footprint. Gibraltar prices residential rentals here around that mixed-use convenience rather than treating Kearny Mesa like a purely residential suburb.
